I love this pasta, because it is SUPER easy and only takes a short while to make, and all in one pot (not including the dishes you eat from).
3 tbsp all purpose flour
3/4 tsp each salt, and Italian seasoning
1/4 tsp pepper
3 cups of milk
2 cups water
12 ounces whole wheat rotini or other short pasta ( I used bow tie)
2 cups small broccoli florets
1 can (19 oz) Italian Style stewed tomatoes, drained
1/2 cup freshly grated Canadian Parmesan Cheese (or any kind works as well)
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
In a large pot, whisk flour, salt, Italian seasoning, pepper into Milk and water, heat over medium high heat just until steaming, stirring twice. Stir in rotini or other pasta and cover, reduce heat to medium low and simmer, stirring often for 10 minutes.
Stir in brocoli, cover and simmer for about 2 minutes longer or until pasta is tender.
Uncover and cook stiring gently for about 3 minutes more or until pasta is tender but firm, brocoli is tender crisp, and sauce is thickened. Stir in the tomatoes and parmesan, cook breaking up tomatoes with a spoon until heated through. Serve with sprinkled basil.
What I usually do is take 2 skinned and de boned chicken breats, cut and cube them, cook in a frying pan until done, and then add to the pasta just as I am adding the tomatoes and parmesan cheese.
If you want to use white pasta, decrease the total cooking time in step one to about 9 minutes.
My son loves this pasta, we have only recently switched from the white pasta to the whole wheat and we love it.
